I’m sure you’ve seen the online videos of random acts of culture, such as a group singing the Hallelujah Chorus in Macy’s. Calling it random is a bit of a stretch, as organizing 650 singers in a busy department store is no small feat! Here at eLearning, we created our own random act of culture on a somewhat smaller scale.

On December 16, 2011, our students, staff, and parents visited businesses within walking distance of our Thibodaux learning center to sing Christmas carols. It was incredibly enjoyable to walk the neighborhood with the children and sing Christmas carols with them. We visited the businesses unannounced, simply walking in singing, led by our own Pied Piper, Nancy Toups, playing guitar. Our stunned but delighted audience included a jewelry store, a nail salon, a mortgage bank, and a grocery store. The photos here are from the grocery store.

The Christmas spirit is alive and well here in Thibodaux! Shoppers stopped to listen, as did employees at the grocery store. Some even joined us and sang along. After four carols, we departed as suddenly as we arrived, and had a Christmas celebration at the learning center. This was actually our second year caroling with the kids, so it is quickly becoming an annual tradition.

And now we throw down the gauntlet. We challenge you to create your own random acts of culture in your neighborhood. Spread Christmas cheer from sea to shining sea! Send us photos and videos of your random acts, and comment below so we can all share the joy

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at eLearning!
