As another school year gets underway, we see more and more the benefits of technology as a tool for our students in the classroom and beyond. Whether it’s the creation of our original lessons and videos or our students and teachers collaborating on projects with technology, eLearning understands the importance of technology in education. Technology pervades every facet of our world. By the age of 2, 90% of kids have an online history. By the age of 5, 50% have used a tablet or other internet connected device. But when is it time to disconnect during the day and why?
First of all, research shows that taking a break from technology for ten-minute intervals improves productivity. Being unplugged also aids in lowering stress and anxiety. There is proof that becoming more mindful and connected with your surroundings can keep depression and anxiety at bay along with improving one’s ability to focus. Therefore no matter how essential technology is to our daily lives, it is important to take a break from the electronics and also focus in on our surroundings.
It is even more important to part with electronic devices when it is time forced. Nearly two-thirds of Americans claim they do not get enough sleep. “Research shows that interactive technologies such as video games, cell phones, and the internet might affect the brain differently than those which are “passively received” such as TV and music.” Those technologies are more “alerting” and can cause the user not to be able to reach a restful state. Furthermore, cell phones and computers can cause problems with falling and staying asleep because “screens are so bright they inhibit the production of the sleep-inducing hormone Melatonin, which is produced in dark surroundings.”
Here at eLearning,we encourage you to start this school year by taking time every night to unplug and reconnect. Be sure to check out our monthly article featuring a new “unplugged” activity every month. Let’s all “power down” for a great year!
