You’re unhappy with the school your child is currently attending, and you are wondering if home schooling is the solution.
I’ve walked in those shoes before, so I understand the anxiety this can produce in a parent. Home schooling can work for many families, but it isn’t the solution for everyone. Here are five points to consider when making a decision about home schooling.

1. Time. Can you or another adults pend several hours a day teaching and monitoring the child’s work? Remember that the children can help with the day to day chores at home, which is also an important part of their education. Once everyone adjusts to the new routine, it will take less time per day. For some families, this question really boils down to can you afford to be home with your children.Though it is possible to work and home school, it is very challenging, and I would not recommend it for beginning home schoolers unless you have a considerable amount of help and support.

2. Money. Can you afford to purchase home schooling materials for your children? It is possible to home school on a shoestring budget, so don’t let this be a huge obstacle to you. However, it can be a shock to your budget if you are moving from a free public education to paying for it yourself.

3. Space. Do you have space in your home to dedicate to learning? You can use the family dining room or an unused bedroom. Try to avoid using the playroom or children’s bedrooms. Children may find it difficult to concentrate if they are surrounded by toys or personal belongings

4. Support. Do you have the support of your spouse, family members or friends? Do you know someone who is currently home schooling? It is very helpful to have someone to turn to for advice, or just a listening ear when you need a little support. A local home school group is a great place to meet like-minded parents and get the support and advice you need.

5. Motivation. Are you and your children motivated to learn together and succeed? Are you ready to begin a wonderful new adventure together? If you are excited about it, your children will probably be excited too.
