How Food Impacts Learning

We’ve all heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” But did you know that food can dramatically impact how well your child learns? A balanced diet is essential for healthy development and academic success. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at how food choices affect learning in children.

The Relationship Between Nutrition and Learning

It’s no secret that a nutritious diet helps keep our bodies healthy. But what many people don’t realize is that it also has an impact on learning. It’s important that parents understand the importance of nutrition when it comes to the academic success of their child. Healthy meals should include fruits & vegetables rich in various vitamins & minerals as well as protein & healthy fats from sources such as eggs, fish & nuts/seeds, which contribute towards higher cognitive functions & better memory retention, among other benefits associated with a nutrient-dense diet. Eating a balanced diet ensures that your child gets the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients they need to perform their best in school.

Nutrition and Brain Development

Good nutrition plays an especially important role during early childhood, when the brain is rapidly developing. Children who eat a healthy diet are more likely to have better academic performance than those with poor diets. This is because certain vitamins and minerals play an important role in brain development.

Making Healthy Food Choices

The key to providing your child with the nutrients they need for optimum learning is to make sure they’re eating healthy foods from all five food groups: fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains, and dairy products. Encourage them to try new foods – you may be surprised by how much variety they can tolerate! Also, be sure to avoid processed foods as much as possible; these tend to be high in sugar and salt but low in nutritional value.

Eating right is essential for healthy brain development and academic success in children. Healthy snacks like fruit or nuts can help them stay focused throughout the day while providing vital nutrients their bodies need for growth and development. By making smart food choices now, you can ensure your child has the best chance of succeeding academically now and in the future!

Ready to learn about how food can impact learning? To start, have your kids help you prepare this recipe from Claire Kopfler, registered dietician and owner of Healthe Cafe!

Baked peaches or apples topped with yogurt! You can add a light drizzle of honey or caramel to make it more attractive to your child.

Simply toss fresh diced peaches or apples in cinnamon and a small amount of oil (just enough to coat the fruit to keep it from drying out). Bake at 400 for about 12-15 minutes (stirring half way through) until fresh has reached desired softness

Add your favorite yogurt on top. A low fat (1%) or fat free/no sugar added brand is best, but if your child likes a particular kind of yogurt that doesn’t meet that criteria, don’t sweat it! The goal is to get them to eat more fruit, which provides a variety of essential nutrients, and dairy, which provides the calcium which is especially vital for a growing child.

Working towards a healthier diet can be challenging, but any small step in the right direction is a win!
